Arthritis, live long enough and you can surely count on developing it.

Arthritis

It is not a single theme disease but consists of over 100 separate conditions or forms.

Types

These types can range from the crippling rheumatoid type to just a minor bother like tennis elbow. Gout is actually a form of this disease and osteoarthritis is becoming more and more prevalent. Other forms of this disease are lupus, various rheumatisms and of course osteoporosis. Children as well as persons in the prime of life can experience the debillatating effects of this affliction. They all share two things in common, joint pain and inflammation.

Why Inflammation?

Inflammation is the bodies natural response to injury. The warning signs are heat, swelling, discolouration and pain.In severe cases, the joint can be disabled.

Joint Functions

The body has more than 206 bones and more than 100 joints. The bones that make up the joints are tied together by ligaments. The joint sockets are lined with a tough material, with elastic qualities, called cartilage. The cartilage acts as a shock absorber and a glide smooth surface for the bone ends. If the cartilage is destroyed or damaged, the bone ends grind together. The result is pain, immobility and dysfunction to varying degrees. We have yet to discover a cause of this disease but something can be done to manage most forms of it.

What to do?

Take Control - Don't let this disease beat you. Learn everything possible about your particular form of the disease. Then eat healthy, exercise regularly, understand your doctor's prescribed medications, be forth-right with your treatment team and explore complementary therapies. You must manage arthritis or it will manage you.
