What are Antioxidants?
AntioxidantsWhat are antioxidants? Well, they are substances that destroy free radicals and repair damage to our cells. In the body their role is to protect our cells from the excessive damage of these free radicals. Free Radical Effects--Where do they come from? Free radicals are harmful oxidant agents and are produced both internally and externally. Internally they are produced by inflamed immune cells and cellular metabolism. Externally they are produced by irradiated foods, toxins (such as those found in cleaning agents, solvents and many paints and carpets), cooked foods, oxidized polyunsaturated fats and pharmaceuticals. What are antioxidants? They are the destroyers of free radicals. These oxidants are harmful molecules that are missing an electron, thereby making them unstable; they will attack our cells and rob an electron thus creating another dangerous oxidant. Antioxidant BenefitsHow do antioxidants work? Antioxidants intercede on our cells behalf, sacrifice an electron, neutralize the radical, thus stopping a chain reaction. The radical can now be removed. If there are not enough defensive, antioxidant agents in our immune system to give up an electron, our cells can become severely damaged and this can lead to immune system disease. These defensive agents, can also repair cellular damage, thus moderating the effects of aging on our cells. They also protect us from cancer causing DNA damage. Our blood vessel membranes are prevented from being injured thereby helping to defend against cardiovascular deficiency. What foods contain antioxidants? They are found in certain foods such as grapes, blueberries, mangosteen, goji juice and the beta-carotene fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cantalope, sweet potatoes, broccoli and winter squash. EsterC and Coryceps(a mushroom)EsterC, a form of vitamin C, is readily absorbed in digestion (high bioavailability) and it is not acidic. It is an excellent combatant against these free radicals. A mushroom species, coryceps, is also becoming popular as an agent of combat. Studies show coryceps also raise good cholesterol HDL and lowers bad LDL, as well as reduce fatigue and increase stamina. Destroying free radicals plays an important role in the goals of your Senior Wellness Center . Live better, with your antioxidants.
